While there are other theme parks that offer train excursions, ranging from major parks like Disneyland to smaller family-owned amusement parks, there is nothing quite like the Dollywood Express! On this breathtaking 5-mile journey through the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, an authentic 110-ton coal-fired steam engine leads the way! This train is not only one of the most popular attractions in Dollywood, but has a fascinating history that dates back to the 1960s! Here are 3 interesting things to know about the Dollywood Express train ride:

1. What to Expect

The Dollywood Express Train Ride offers a scenic excursion that is fun for the whole family, from the kids to the grandparents! Once the engineer sounds the whistle, you’ll know that your 20-minute excursion into the mountains is about to begin! During this exciting journey, you’ll leave the screams of roller coaster riders behind and pass along some of the most beautiful views that nature has to offer. If you close your eyes, you can imagine what it was like back in time when travel in and out of the mountains of Pigeon Forge relied on trains like the Dollywood Express! There are no reservations necessary for the train ride, but try to arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of boarding times since the train is loaded on a first-come, first-served basis!

2. History of the Dollywood Express

The train ride that Dollywood visitors enjoy today actually started its life in the theme park industry back in 1961 when the Rebel Railroad attraction opened in Pigeon Forge. In 1957, North Carolina real-estate developer Grover Robbins opened the Tweetsie Railroad attraction between Boone and Blowing Rock, NC. The park was an instant success, and in 1961, he purchased two USATC S118 Class 2-8-2 steam locomotives. One was sent to Tweetsie to replace the original engine there, while the other went to the Rebel Railroad theme park. Over the years, the Rebel Railroad attraction expanded and changed names to the Gold Rush Junction and Silver Dollar City Tennessee, before opening as Dollywood in 1986!

3. Changes to the Dollywood Express Over the Years

During the era of Silver Dollar City Tennessee, from 1976 to 1986, the steam locomotive was given a completely new look. It was painted black instead of Tweetsie green, and it was fitted with balloon stacks to give it a more western appearance. When Dollywood opened, the locomotive ran for many years with the balloon stacks until they were removed after the 2004 operating season. It also received a new coat of paint, and the paint schemes have constantly been changing over the years. One thing that has not changed is the classic steam train experience! In fact, riders experience contact with coal soot and cinders, so Dollywood recommends that guests protect their eyes during the ride.
